GAZA 27 Okt. - Perdana Menteri Israel, Ariel Sharon meluluskan operasi ketenteraan secara besar-besaran di wilayah Tebing Barat, tindakan terbaru mengisytiharkan `perang’ ke atas warga Palestin berikutan serangan berani mati di Hadera semalam.

Beberapa jam selepas Sharon meluluskan tindakan ketenteraan, tentera Israel memasuki bandar Jenin di Tebing Barat menyebabkan tercetusnya pertempuran.

Lima rakyat Israel terkorban manakala 30 lagi cedera dalam serangan berani mati di sebuah pasar dipenuhi orang ramai semalam.

Sumber-sumber keselamatan berkata, Sharon dan Menteri Pertahanan, Shaul Mofaz memutuskan untuk menjalankan operasi bagi menyerang pejuang kumpulan Islamic Jihad di utara Tebing Barat yang mengaku bertanggungjawab melakukan serangan tersebut.

Israel juga akan melakukan serangan ke atas kumpulan itu di Genting Gaza.

Tiada sebarang jadual dinyatakan bagi serangan di Tebing Barat.

Islamic Jihad menyatakan serangan berani mati itu adalah sebagai menuntut bela tindakan pihak Israel membunuh seorang komander tertinggi kumpulan terbabit, Loai Assadi di Tebing Barat, Isnin lepas.

Mofaz ketika bercakap kepada wartawan menyatakan kerajaan Israel akan melakukan apa sahaja bagi melancarkan serangan ke atas infrastruktur milik pihak yang melakukan keganasan itu.

Sementara itu, pesawat-pesawat Israel melancarkan tiga serangan di Genting Gaza, awal hari ini bagi menghalang kumpulan pejuang melepaskan tembakan roket ke arah wilayah Yahudi.

Serangan udara tersebut masuk hari ketiga dalam siri keganasan paling dahsyat pernah berlaku sejak pengunduran Israel dari Gaza. - Agensi

Invitation to Islam

, Issue 5, October 1998

A bomb goes off in a marketplace in Jerusalem. A suicide bomber launches himself into a bus full of women and children in Tel Aviv. Foreign tourists get massacred at a holiday resort in Luxor, Egypt. Villages upon villages get annihilated in Algeria. The list of events worldwide which have come to symbolise the ‘Islamic terror’ are endless. From the times in the 70’s and 80’s when Pan Am and TWA aeroplanes would be highjacked, to the mid 80’s in war torn Lebanon where Americans and Europeans would be held as hostages for years; all such incidents have come to be identified with the religion of Islam. Such incidents from past and present have undoubtedly affected Muslims worldwide and more so in the West. Any Muslim, who wants to practice his/her religion and expresses the pious desire to live under the banner of Islam, is labelled a fundamentalist or extremist. Any Muslim man who walks down a busy street in London or Paris (and Paris moreso) with a beard and a scarf on his head, is looked upon as being a terrorist who’s probably got an AK47 stashed somewhere on his person. Muslim women who are veiled can’t go anywhere in the Western world without being taunted as being oppressed or being mad (for covering up). However, are such beliefs and opinions about Islam really justified?

Exploding the myth

One of the many short comings which has arisen in the West, is judging Islam by the conduct of a minority of its people. By doing this, segments of Western society have deliberately played off the desperate actions of many Muslims, and have given it the name of Islam. Such behaviour is clearly not objective and seeks to distort the reality of Islam. For if such a thing was done - judge a religion by the conduct of its people - then we too could say that all Christianity is about is child molesting and homosexuality [1] whilst Hinduism was all about looting and breaking up mosques [2]. Generalising in such a manner is not seen as being objective, yet we find that the Western world is foremost in propagating this outlook on Islam. So what is the reality of Islam? How does one dispel the myths which have been created and spread so viciously? The only way to examine Islam is to simply examine its belief system. Look at its sources, the Qur’an and Sunna, and see what they have to say. This is the way to find the truth about what Islam says about terror, terrorism and terrorists. One who is sincerely searching for the truth, will do it no other way. The very name Islam comes from the Arabic root word ’salama’ which means peace. Islam is a religion which is based upon achieving peace through the submission to the will of Allah. Thus, by this very simple linguistic definition, one can ascertain as to what the nature of this religion is. If such a religion is based on the notion of peace, then how is it that so many acts done by its adherents are contrary to peace? The answer is simple. Such actions, if not sanctioned by the religion, have no place with it. They are not Islamic and should not be thought of as Islamic.

Jihad

The word jihad sends shivers down the spines of many Westerners. They readily equate this term with violence and oppression. However, it must be said that the meaning of jihad, as a ‘holy war’, is something which is totally foreign and not from Islam. If anything, such a description belongs more so to Christianity and its adherents. It was terms like this which were used to justify the slaughter and pillage of towns and cities during the crusades by the Christians. By simply looking into the sources of Islam, one is able to know that the true meaning of jihad is to strive/make effort in the way of Allah. Thus striving in the way of Allah can be both peaceful and physical. The Prophet Muhammed (saws) said:

"The best jihad is (by) the one who strives against his own self for Allah, The Mighty and Majestic" [3]

In the Qur’an, Allah also says:

"So obey not the disbelievers, but make a great jihad (effort) against them (by preaching) with it (the Qur’an)"
(Surah Al-Furqan 25:52)

By controlling and fighting against ones desires, the Muslims can then also physically exert themselves in the path of Allah. It is this physical or combative jihad which receives so much criticism. Because of the sheer ignorance of this type of jihad Islam is regarded as terror, and Muslims are regarded as terrorists. However, the very purpose of this physical jihad is to raise the word of Allah uppermost. By doing this, it liberates and emancipates all those who are crying out for freedom all over the world. If the likes of the pacifists of this world had their way, then the world would indeed be full of anarchy and mischief. The combative jihad seeks to correct this as Allah says in the Qur’an:

"And if Allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the Earth would be full of mischief. But Allah is full of bounty to the worlds"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:251)

Such would be the corruption on this Earth if there had never been a combative jihad that Allah says:

"For had it not been that Allah checks one set of people by means of another, monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is mentioned much, would surely have been pulled down. Indeed Allah will help those who help His (cause). Truly Allah is All strong, All mighty"
(Surah Al-Hajj 22:40)

This combative jihad being both defensive and offensive, is something which is commanded by Allah upon the Muslims. Through this command the oppressed and weak are rescued from the tyranny of the world:

"And what is the matter with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah and for those weak, ill treated and oppressed among men, women and children whose only cry is; ‘Our Lord, rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors and raise for us from you one who will protect and raise for us from you one who will help"
(Surah An-Nisa 4:75)

Anyone who knows the early history of Islam, will know that all those nations and empires which came under the fold of Islam were indeed previously oppressed. When the companions of the Prophet Muhammed (saws) went out for the offensive jihad against the Egyptians, the Persians and the Romans, we find that the people did not resist against them at all. Rather, they accepted Islam on such a scale, that it is inconceivable that the jihad of Islam could be anything other then a liberation for these people; a liberation from centuries of tyranny. In fact, with the Byzantine Egyptians and the people of Spain, the Muslims were even beckoned to come and liberate these lands from the oppression of their kings. This is the glorious track record of the Muslim jihad. Compare this with the brutal track record of warfare in the Western world over the centuries. From the crusades against the Muslims to the days of colonial warfare, the Western world has killed, destroyed and plundered everything which has come in its way. Even today this merciless killing goes on by the Western nations. While claiming to be about world peace and security, Western nations are ready to bomb innocent civilians at the drop of a hat. The classic example of this is the recent bombings of Sudan and Afghanistan. Whilst claiming that Sudan and Afghanistan were havens for Islamic terrorists, the bombings of these two nations could not have come at a better time for the American president Bill Clinton. The destruction of innocent lives which were a result of these bombings clearly seem to have been an attempt by Clinton to avert attention away from his sexual misdemeanours; [4] something which he so often gets caught up in. Without doubt this was the reason for such terror from the American military upon innocent people. This is the same American military which claims to enter the worlds trouble spots under the guise of being peace keepers. But

"… when it is said to them; ‘Make not mischief on the Earth’, they say; ‘We are only peace makers’. Indeed they are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive it not"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:11-12)

The hypocrisy of the West is indeed astounding.

By looking at the rules and regulations of this combative jihad it will be clear to any sincere person that this is indeed the religion of truth. When fighting an unjust enemy, no matter how unjust they are, it is forbidden by Islam that their retreating forces are mutilated, tortured or slaughtered. The treacherous violation of treaties and carrying out assassinations after a cease fire, are also prohibited. Allah says in the Qur’an:

"And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you. But do not transgress the limits. Truly Allah loves not the transgressors"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:190)

Not transgressing the limits means not to kill women and children, for the Messenger of Allah (saws) "forbade the killing of women and children" [5]. Not transgressing the limits means that the elderly, the sick, monks, worshippers and hired labourers are not attacked. Not transgressing the limits means not killing animals wantonly, burning crops and vegetation, polluting waters and destroying homes, monasteries, churches and synagogues:

"Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion, nor drove you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who deal with equity"
(Surah Al-Mumtahinah 60:8)

After reading such passages from the Qur’an and knowing about what Islam commands and prohibits in jihad, the rules of warfare are given a new meaning; a meaning of justice. How sad it is then, that whilst Islam is condemned for striking terror into the hearts of the people, the likes of the Serbs, the Indian army in Kashmir and the Israeli soldiers in Palestine are left untarnished for the atrocities they have committed in the name of warfare.

So what about suicide bombing, is this too a part of jihad in Allah’s path? From what has already been stated above, it can be deduced that this is not from the religion. However, unfortunately many Muslims have taken suicide bombing as being a virtuous act by which one receives reward. This could not be further from the truth. The Prophet (saws) said: "Those who go to extremes are destroyed" [6]. Suicide bombing is undoubtedly an extremity which has reached the ranks of the Muslims. In the rules of warfare, we find no sanction for such an act from the behaviour and words of the Prophet Muhammed (saws) and his companions. Unfortunately, today (some misguided) Muslims believe that such acts are paving the way for an Islamic revival and a return to the rule of Islam’s glorious law. However, we fail to bear in mind that the Prophet (saws) said:

"Do not be delighted by the action of anyone, until you see how he ends up" [7]

So, for example what is the end of a suicide bomber in Palestine?, a leg here, an arm there. Massive retaliation by the Israeli’s in the West Bank and Gaza. More Muslims killed and persecuted. How can we be delighted with such an end? What really hammers the final nail in the coffin of this act, is that it is suicide; something which is clearly forbidden in Islam. The Messenger of Allah (saws) said:

"He who kills himself with anything, Allah will torment him with that in the fire of Hell" [8]

Some are under the misconception that by killing oneself for an Islamic cause, one commits an act which deserves Paradise. Once when a man killed himself, the Prophet (saws) said: "He is a dweller of the Fire". When the people were surprised at this, the Prophet (saws) said:

"A person performs the deeds which to the people appears to be the deeds befitting the dweller of Paradise, but he is in fact one of the dwellers of the Fire" [9]

The taking of ones life which Allah has given as a trust to the human, is a great sin. Likewise the taking of other lives (which is so often the case with suicide bombing) is also forbidden, as human life is indeed precious:

"…If anyone killed a person not in retaliation for murder or to spread mischief in the land, it would be as if he killed the whole of mankind. And (likewise) if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole of mankind"
(Surah Al-Maaida 5:32)

Thus, all other types of extremities such as hostage taking, hijacking and planting bombs in public places, are clearly forbidden in Islam.

The Media

By going through the teachings of Islam, it is clear that such a religion has only come to benefit mankind - not to destroy it. So why is there so much hatred for this noble religion in the West? The answer is simple, the media. It is the Jewish influenced media of the West which has portrayed Islam to be something that it is not. During the 70’s and 80’s when the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) were carrying out daring highjacks on the worlds airways, the media in the West portrayed it as being Islamic. When the Shi’ite suicide bombers of the 80’s were causing so much havoc in the Lebanon and in the Gulf region, the media in the West portrayed it as a part of Islam. However, it is known by the heads of the media that the likes of the PLO were not an Islamic organisation, and that according to Islam, Shi’ites are outside the fold of Islam [10]. Yet such facts are never portrayed by a media which seeks to cover the truth of this religion. A number of years ago, when the Oklahoma City bomb went off, a headline in one of the newspapers, ‘Today’ [11], summed up this attitude. With a picture of a fire fighter holding a dead child in his arms, the headline read: "In The Name of Islam" Time has of course proven that this bigoted assumption was incorrect, as Timothy McVeigh, a right wing radical now faces the death penalty for the crime [12]. Likewise the bombs which went off in the Paris metro in 1995, were also blamed on Muslim fanatics. It has now emerged that the Algerian secret service who having routinely bribed many European journalists and MPs, were actually behind it. The desire to throw a veil over Islam is immense by these people:

"They intend to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will complete His light even though the disbelievers hate (it)"
(Surah As-Saff 61:8)

Whilst trying to destroy Islam through this instrument of the media, the Jews clearly try to portray an image of themselves as being the oppressed people. Every year, we are reminded as to how many Jews perished under the Nazis in World War II. We are made to feel sorry for these same people who have gone on to commit so many crimes upon the Palestinian people. Some may say that this is a racist and biased viewpoint. But we say; If this media was not run and orchestrated by the Jews and was truly neutral, then why are Menachem Begin and Yitzhak Shamir, two former Israeli prime ministers, not held aloft as being terrorists? Anyone who knows about the history of the Palestinian occupation will tell you that these two men were members of the Stern Gang and Irgun, two notorious Jewish terror groups who killed many innocent people [13]. If this media was truly impartial, then why does it not tell about the extent of the Israeli bombardment and illegal occupation of Southern Lebanon and its people? [14] And if this media really had nothing against the religion of Allah, then why does it not inform the people that every day hundreds are entering the religion of Islam? Such things will never be highlighted in the Western media, simply because to do so would be against their very interests.

With such immense pressure against it, it is indeed a blessing from Allah that Islam goes from strength to strength. It continues to grow faster then any other religion in the Western world, conquering the hearts and minds of thousands. All this should not even surprise us though, for Allah has promised us that this religion will prevail:

"It is He who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it victorious over all other religions, even though the disbelievers detest it"
(Surah As-Saff 61:9)

It is a must that humanity comes towards the religion of Islam. Without it, we will continue to slip down the road of inequity and darkness. With it we can establish a society of justice and peace. Religion of terror? … no. The way forward? … yes.

"There is no compulsion in religion. The right path has indeed become distinct from the wrong. So whoever rejects false worship and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All Hearing, All Knowing"
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256)

4,009 Palestinians Killed and More than 44,500 Wounded by Israelis from September 2000 to February 2005, PNIC Report

GAZA, Palestine, March 22, 2005 (IPC) - -

Since the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising (Intifada) in September 2000, through February 2005, 4,009 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli occupation forces plus 82 were unregistered due to he Israeli measures, while 44,500 others have been injured, plus 8435 received treatment on the spot, according to a report published by the Palestinian National Information Center (PNIC) of the Gaza-based State Information Service.

The PNIC report mentioned that the number of killed children aged less than 18 years reached 742. 261 females, 344 security members and 817 students and teachers were also killed during the years of the Intifada.

As for the killed in extrajudicial executions perpetrated by Israeli undercover units and warplanes, the number had risen to 324, as that of those died due to delays at checkpoints mounted to 130 men, women, children and elderly.

Meanwhile, the frequent Israeli armed settler attacks resulted in the killing of 49 civilians, while 36 members of medical and civil defense crews, along with 9 journalists and 220 athletes lost their lives to the Israeli forces.

The total wounded Palestinians reached 44500 plus 8435 received treatment in the field, as the number of students and employees who were shot and wounded by Israeli gunfire has reached 4800.

As for the prisoners profile, the report explained that 7000 Palestinians are currently jailed inside Israeli prisons and concentration camps, including 644 who have been in prison prior to the outbreak of the Intifada, distributed across 24 Israeli prisons, concentration camps and detention centers.

Prisoner students reached 1389, including 310 children, 196 teachers and employees of higher education ministry. 800 others sustaining chronic diseases, in addition to 126 female prisoners including 41 have been courted while 10 others were administrative detainees.

The report made clear also that the total number of demolished houses throughout the abovementioned period has reached 69843 including 7438 completely destroyed including 4595 while the number of partially demolished houses was 63099, of which 22879 in the Strip.

As for the educational buildings that have been damaged by the Israeli aggression, 12 institutions were damaged, including universities and schools, which have been closed under military orders.

316 schools have also been exposed to shelling, as 43 others have been turned into military outposts, the report hinted.

Regarding the Israeli violations against the Palestinian agricultural sector, the report referred that the total areas of Palestinian-owned lands that have been razed by the Israeli bulldozers reached 76471 dunums, as 2054121 trees have been uprooted.

765 stores have been demolished, 765 farms and pens have been devastated, 31056 of dunums of irrigation networks have been bulldozed, and 1326 water wells have been destroyed.

899767 broilers and 350148 layers have lost, while 14749 sheep, lost as well.12131 cows lost also, while 15265 bee hives have been damaged, as 397 water wells destroyed completely and 207 Palestinian farmers-owned houses have been demolished, the report counted.

The PNIC’s report mentioned that the number of unemployed Palestinians has reached 287.000, rating %31.2 of the Palestinian people, as the rate of poverty across the Palestinian territories reached %67.6 according to a survey pt poverty by the Palestinian central statistics bureau Dec 2003.

The Israeli occupation troop violations against the journalists reached 724 attacks, as the shelling of residential buildings has been 31473 times since October 10, 2001until October 31, 2004, the PNIC made clear.

As for the Israeli checkpoints that have been placed by the occupation troops across the occupied Palestinian territories, the report numbered them to 2924.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy, 413 Palestinian industrial facilities have been exposed to severe damages due to the Israeli violations.

Finally, the official Palestinian report said that the Israeli occupation authorities have expropriated 214127 dunums of Palestinian-owned lands for the sake of the Apartheid Wall.

Season ticket on a one-way ride …

During the course of the last several few weeks, noticeably evident in the last few days, we have seen little change with respect to the Mid-east’s newfound plan for peace, commonly referred to as the "Road Map." This is largely because, while Palestinians at large are trying to follow it, the Israeli government has largely ignored it, continuing on its high-speed joyride down the highway to hell. In this respect, a long and noticeable trend continues. And it is time to put this in perspective, once and for all.

With the acceptance of the Road Map by both Israel and Palestine, a glimmer of hope initially appeared in the distance. Many felt that, unlike all the other measures before it, like the Oslo Accords, that the Road Map would somehow fare better. In fact, it is going the same route as all others, doomed to failure as a direct result of militant Zionism, which directly produces the reactionary element among the Palestinians.

In the late 1940s, Israel was formed on the blood of many innocents. Terrorists there ruled the day. The Zionists sent off letter bombs to many people; Churchill himself barely escaped one. Churchill’s good friend, Lord Moyne, was not so lucky; the Zionists murdered him, causing the terrorist state of Israel not to form until after Churchill was gone. The Jewish terrorist responsible for Lord Moyne’s death also murdered UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte. Another terrorist bombed the King David Hotel, murdering many innocent Europeans and Arabs who were staying there. In what can only be viewed as state-sanctioned terrorism, the two leaders responsible for the murders of many innocents through assassinations and bombings–Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin, respectively–would later become prime ministers of Israel. This was to be part of a long, ongoing trend of viciousness, aimed at anyone and everyone who got in Israel’s way.

Even since the early days, when Israel itself was formed, it has flagrantly refused to abide by its agreements. For example, the UN only agreed to recognize Israel if the Palestinians who were driven from their homes would be allowed to return. In fact, there were approximately 1 million Palestinians who were forced to live in tents in the desert–with others literally forced to the sea–as a direct result of Zionist-induced terrorism. A UN resolution was made to this effect, and it has been but one of dozens of others that Israel has carelessly disregarded in its efforts to attain Jewish supremacy in the area, if not the world.

Since its formation, Israel has attacked Palestinians and others in such a ruthless manner that it would have made the Nazis cringe. Their brutality and sheer viciousness knows no bounds. Even America has not escaped Israel’s wrath.

In the early years of Israel’s formation, Americans witnessed many of its interests in Egypt bombed, commonly referred to now as the LaVon Affair, which was deliberately done by Israel in an effort to pin the blame on Egyptians. It was only due to the ineptness of the Zionist hatemongers that the matter was exposed: An Israeli was literally caught "red handed" with an incendiary device going off that he had been carrying.

Later, Americans witnessed Israelis murder many innocent Americans on the nigh-defenseless ship the USS Liberty, which was in international waters at the time and had been identified as an American ship by Israelis according to their radio reports before the gruesome attack. The Israelis sought to murder all the Americans aboard with their unmarked planes, then pin the blame on Egypt so that America would attack it. After Zionist hatemongers put a 40-foot wide hole in the side of the ship and committed other war crimes–they napalmed many innocent and defenseless American soldiers, machine-gunned down life boats, shot missiles and other projectiles at the defenseless crew members aboard the ship–the Zionists stopped. And the Zionists only stopped in their unprovoked act of terrorism because its inept terrorists were unable to completely destroy the transmission capabilities of the USS Liberty, enabling a call for help. It was an Act of War on Israel’s part, an act for wh! ich America’s leaders, unduly influenced by Zionist plutocratic campaign support, has failed to make Israel accountable.

What has happened since the time of Israelis bombing the USS Liberty? Israel has continued on its bloodstained terrorist campaign. Mohammed Tareq Al-Khadra, who has been a direct witness to much of the brutal hatred exhibited by the Zionist supremacists, describes this in the book "Zionist Massacres … Committed Against the Palestinian Arab People in the 20th Century." He writes,

"Terrorism is considered the main pillar on which the Zionist movement rested for occupying Palestine. Since the 1930s, the Zionist invaders considered that Palestine should be emptied of its indigenous population, the Palestinian Arabs, so that they can establish their artificial entity on the land of Palestine without instances of future obstacles. … The series of massacres in Palestine did not cease with the creation of the Zionist entity. It, rather, increased in violence and brutality. During that time, the Zionist occupiers perpetrated many grisly massacres against our people, rendering homeless hundreds of thousands of them."

This book then documents literally hundreds of such massacres committed by the Zionist hatemongers. "Al-Quds Massacre–29 December 1947. The Irgun terrorist gang threw a barrel full of explosives near Bal Al-Amood in Jerusalem, killing 14 Arabs and injuring 27…. Al Quds Massacre–30 December 1947. The Irgun terrorist gang hurled a bomb from a fast moving car, killing 11 Arabs…. Balad El-Sheikh Massacre–31 December 1947 to 1 January 1948. On New Year’s Eve, a joint force composed of the First Battalion of the Palmach and of the Carmeli Brigade led by Chaim Avinoam attacked the village, killing 60 Arabs…. Jaffa Massacre–4 January 1948. Stern Zionist gang threw a bomb at a crowded square in Jaffa, killing 15 and injuring 98…. The Massacre of the ‘Old Government House’ in Jaffa. On 4 January 1948, the Irgun Zionist gang placed a car filled with explosives adjacent to the Old Government House. The blast destroyed the building and everyone in its vicinity. Thirty Arab! s were murdered, others injured…."

The list goes on. Later, it becomes like a diary of who died in unchecked Zionist atrocities. One day after another, it lists many of those who have been murdered, hundreds upon hundreds of such incidents. Take the date 15 November 2000, for instance:

"Today, the Zionist army and police killed eleven Palestinians:

1.) Khalil Abdul-Nasser Atallah, a 10-year-old child from Nablus;

2.) Muhammad Khater Al-Ajla, a 13-year-old child from the Shuja’iyya quarter of Gaza. He was shot in the head at Mintar crossing;

3.) Nasser Muhammad Sharafi, a 15-year-old child from Gaza, was shot in the head at Mintar crossing;

4.) Jaddou’ Manee’ Abul-Kabbash, a 16-year-old from Sammou/Hebron, was shot in the chest;

5.) Ibrahim Abdul-Raoof Ju-eidi, a 15-year-old child from Qalquilya, was shot in the chest;

6.) Ahmad Sameer Bassal, a 17-year-old from Al-Hawa/Gaza, was shot in the heart at Mintar crossing;

7.) Fathi Awdeh Salem Obeid, a 23-year-old from Tulkarm camp, was shot in the chest;

8.) Samer Khairi Khadr, a 29-year-old from Kafir Rumman/Tulkarm, was shot in the chest by an Israeli policeman;

9.) Abdul-Hafez Muhammad Azoof, a 20-year-old from Jericho, was shot in the chest;

10.) Ahmad Saeed Ahmad Sha’ban, an 18-year-old from Jalama camp/Jenin, was shot in the abdomen;

11.) Muhammad Obeid, a 22-year-old from Gaza, was killed."

Day after day, Palestinians witness such graphic violence. Well over 2,000 have been killed in the past two years. If Palestine had the same population as America and the same percentage of those murdered held true, there would be over 200,000 people murdered. In fact, these unchecked murders there effect all Palestinians; all have been directly effected by having their loved ones or friends murdered or, at the least, injured.

In response to this, many Palestinians have given up all hope. They have become suicide bombers. Not many people in America approve of their actions; I personally do not. And the same might be said there with respect to these suicide bombers: No one wants to see their children die.

But we must ask ourselves how these suicide bombers can exist? The answer is not a pretty one: It has become so utterly futile for so many, so utterly hopeless, that they have nothing else to lose. They see their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, homes, pets, livelihood–everything, for that matter–get destroyed. These suicide bombers are fully cognizant of the legendary tortures in which the Zionist army engages, from shock treatments to cutting of scraps of skin, to body parts taken from people while still alive, with their corpses tossed in the streets. And these militant Palestinian reactionaries respond in the only manner they feel that they can. Their fellow militants respond happily to the carnage created, but not the mothers and fathers of these children, for the most part. They are sad. How could they be happy, with their children dead? The mothers and the fathers are often targeted, whether approved or not, their homes destro! yed for what their children did. Often, brothers and sisters of these people are also targeted, their homes razed as well. Guilt by association is the Israeli motto. This, in turn, breeds more militants.

The paradox of the situation is unsettling: Israel’s terrorist actions and non-stop land conquests are government sanctioned. The Israeli government allows its Zionist hatemonger militants–indeed, it glowingly approves of–to commit unchecked atrocities. The other day, Zionist helicopters went after what it deemed was a militant in the middle of a crowded square. It murdered many innocent people in its effort to assassinate this man, accused (and, by Israel’s logic) and therefore guilty and subject to murder, according to the Zionist decree. Not too long ago, Zionists took out a skyscraper in an effort to assassinate one person.

On the other hand, the Palestinian leadership at least denounces acts of terrorism perpetrated by its citizens. Yet it is the Palestinians who live in utter futility and ruins thanks to the Zionists, who destroy the Palestinians’ land, crops, trees, homes, and lives. If the Palestinian leadership were to act the same way as the Israelis, openly promoting government sanctioned assassinations of Israelis who it felt were terrorists, there would be condemnation of this. But this same treatment is not given for the Israelis.

When you think about the disparities arising over there, many questions come to mind: Where is the Israelis’ condemnation when their Zionist cohorts randomly bomb the Palestinians, killing many innocents? Why is it always missing? How come we seldom here about the bombs that the Israeli settlers have planted at children’s schools in Palestine, continuing the ongoing trend of sanctioned terrorism? Why are the Israelis who commit such actions never punished accordingly? And what gives these Israelis the right to condemn the Palestinian lone wolves who commit such actions, when Israel itself promotes government-sanctioned terrorism on its part, which has long been part of its policy?

Today, we see the Road Map trying to be administered. It may very well fail, as all other past attempts for peace have failed, as a direct result of Zionist-sponsored terrorism. At the beginning, the Zionists play the part, pretending to be peace partners. This time, they said to the Palestinians, "We are opening checkpoints. Come on through." Many innocent Palestinians tried to get through, but weren’t allowed. They were greeted with percussion bombs, part of Israel’s campaign to induce terror, as if a ploy to prevent others from going through in the future. Then they beat a little 11-year-old child, breaking his legs. Then the Zionist shot missiles in a crowded square, killing several innocents in an attempt to assassinate someone.

There is only one hope for the Road Map. It is the same hope as it has always been: If America stands at the gates of Israel, gathered around it and shouts, "No more!" as if circling the gates of Jericho. Only if America stops the Israeli hatred and unchecked atrocities will hope then again be restored to the Palestinians, who are victims of the unfettered, wicked acts perpetrated by the Zionist hatemongers. Only then will peace return. Israel is on the highway to hell, cruising along carelessly while tossing out tens of billions of American taxpayers’ dollars left-and-right; and it desperately needs to see the Stop sign, forced back on the road to peace.

U.S. President George W. Bush’s new doctrine of preventive war and pre-emptive strikes is turning the UN’s nuclear watchdog into a lapdog.

After decades of low-profile work to promote cooperation on peaceful use of nuclear energy, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is being forced to mediate between the United States and certain members of what the Bush administration terms the axis of evil–namely Iraq, Iran, and North Korea–, with the unfortunate outcome of a likely increase in nuclear weapons.

Until the crisis over Iraq, the 2,200 employees and diplomats at the IAEA in Vienna led a relatively relaxed life, carrying out their duties to inspect and enforce the UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and encourage disarmament of atomic weapons of mass destruction.

But something changed for them when they didn’t find what Bush wanted them to find in their inspections of Iraq: nuclear weapons, or at least a clandestine nuclear program. That seriously damaged relations between Washington and the IAEA. "The U.S. was very angry with the way we presented our findings at the UN Security Council," one IAEA diplomat said. Since then the IAEA has found itself in both the U.S. and world spotlight. Mohamed El-Baradei, director general of the IAEA, has come under "immense pressure from the U.S.," as one diplomat at the UN in Vienna told me.

There has been no time for a diplomatic reconciliation between the U.S. government and the IAEA, as the Bush administration has hastened to frame Iran and North Korea as the new nuclear threats to justify its doctrine.

At the moment, the IAEA is the uneasy mediator between Tehran and Washington: "We have to find a compromise between them," one IAEA diplomat said, after the board of governors of the IAEA decided not to follow the U.S. recommendation to refer the problem with Iran’s nuclear program to the Security Council. The Bush administration wanted to see Iran as a defendant at the Security Council. But this idea was rejected by the other board members, who opted to try to convince Tehran to agree to a stricter inspection regime.

Concretely, Washington wanted Iran to sign an additional protocol to the NPT, allegedly to improve IAEA inspectors’ effectiveness. But Washington refuses to let IAEA inspectors work in the United States, and its main allies in its war on terrorism haven’t signed this protocol, raising doubts about Bush’s commitment to non-proliferation.

Bush’s use of the specter of nuclear threat to legitimate his intimidation policy can also been seen as just another excuse if reports from occupied post-war Iraq are taken into account. When the reports about massive looting in Iraq’s biggest nuclear facility Al-Tuwaitha emerged after the war, the U.S. administration rejected the IAEA’s request to send inspectors to that facility for more than a month. El-Baradei didn’t even get an answer to his letters to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. Meanwhile, strange things must have happened in Al-Tuwaitha: The IAEA in Vienna received several phone calls from U.S. soldiers based at the facility to secure it, who didn’t know what to do with nuclear material they had found.

In North Korea, where good reasons exist to believe nuclear weapons are being developed, the IAEA inspectors were thrown out at the end of last year, prompting agency officials to surmise that their organization is in the middle of a bilateral game between the Asian nation and the United States. Saddled with the duty to resolve the conflict between the two over North Korea’s nuclear program, but without the power to do so, the IAEA is facing the best example to date of problems it may face in the future.

North Korea seized on its international obligations under the NPT only to provoke the United States to restart financial and humanitarian aid. For North Korea, bankrupt in every sense, nuclear weapons seem to be the only way to put pressure on the U.S. superpower. Pyongyang banished IAEA inspectors, not because of its dissatisfaction with the inspection regime, but due to fear of Bush and a possible pre-emptive strike. So North Korea is the first regime to learn this lesson from the standoff over Iraq: If you represent a real nuclear threat to the United States, it may have the will to solve bilateral problems not by force, but by negotiations.

"The U.S. has destroyed our work," an IAEA official said. In other words: Washington’s policy will not support non-proliferation efforts, but rather will lead into a new era of nuclear armament.

Can you name a country in the Middle East suspected of developing nuclear weapons, refusing to open itself to international inspection, and one that probably possesses chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction?

Iraq, perhaps, Iran, maybe, but most definitely Israel. Indeed, while its official spokespersons still deny it, Israel is thought to possess as many as 240 nuclear weapons along with awesome biological weapons.

During Bush’s successful ejaculatory tweaking of American war hysteria over Iraq which aroused 73% of the American electorate to ignore world opinion, flout the UN, and support going off to war, not a single levelheaded American journalist seemed at all interested in this obvious oversight. It was as if Iraq’s development of weapons of mass destruction had nothing to do with Israel’s arsenal. Gosh, what an irrelevancy!

The left incriminated that the reason the Bush couldn’t stop salivating over the prospect of invading Iraq was for its oil: ah yes, greedy Republicans, Texas oil magnates, Halliburton, insider wheeling and dealing. Sounds good, but was there anyone opining that the real reason we invaded Iraq was to keep Israel as the sole nuclear power in the Middle East? The discussion never moved in that direction. And it did not move there probably because the issue was never put on the table. George Will was too busy quarrying into somber ethical issues like whether "French" fries and kisses should be rethought, and Dianne Sawyer couldn’t tear her investigative self away from the Dixie Chicks long enough to even think about it.

Now I know how paranoid ‘media conspiracy’ sounds—but isn’t it curious how in all the words that flowed off those deeply embedded lips of Ted Koppel, he never mentioned Israel’s nuclear weapons or its biological capabilities in all the time he was dressed up like a soldier? Isn’t that taking don’t-ask-don’t-tell to a new level entirely?

Today with Niger’s yellowcake and David Kelley’s death, the media are all flummoxed about what Bush knew or didn’t and whether Blair used ’sexed up’ intelligence. "Did the Bush or Blair administration lead their countries into war using faulty intelligence?" That is how the media from CNN to Michael Eisner’s executive producers are trying to reframe and define the issue for us. Hmmm! Is that really the issue Michael?

Hold on! Hans Blix, even before we went to war, said those Iraqi letters seeking to buy yellowcake uranium were false. They were more than false, he said; they were forgeries! Those letters which made it into the State of the Union message to stir up American testosterone and gather up enough mojo for us to launch our first Tomahawk. . . they were forgeries!

The tainted letters surfaced in Italy. They used the Iranian word ‘hemisphere’ instead of the proper Iraqi word "dome," and Blix said the documents were not written by an Iraqi at all.

Now fantasize for a moment the world learned that it was Iran that was behind the forged letters. What was their gain? To bring the US war machine right to their own borders? Not a very interesting theory.

What would it mean if Israel’s Mossad forged them? Well, it would show that Israel falsely dragged Britain and the U.S. into invading its major adversary and with yellowcake all over its face, relations with that country just might be in for some serious review.

What if the CIA falsified the documents? Well, if George knew they were forgeries and presented such mendacity to the American public as the basis for invading a foreign country, charges of treason and impeachment would be nipping at his coattails. Similarly if the forgery came from Tony Blair’s camp, whilst beseeching his citizenry to go off to war, another government collapse and charge of treason would likely be the outcome.

It is not a question of using faulty intelligence, but of using forgeries to lead a country off to war, no small issue by any means, but the biggest curiosity of our time is that the source of the forgery is not of interest to any of the mainstream media. It is not the focus of 60 Minutes or 60 Minutes II. Barbara Walters is too interested in how tall Senator John Kerry is. Stone Philips has too many serial killers deal with, and Dan Rather is thinking too much these days of Laci Peterson. No one is interested!

Now I don’t favor the thought that our corporate media giants collectively conspire to keep things under wraps. I can’t help but observe that tonight Ted Koppel will suit up as master of ceremonies of that pseudo-intellectual circus he hosts where one guest shouts down his opponent yelling and screaming high decibel epithets—kind of like a Jerry Springer show for the slightly scholarly—and whatever tonight’s topic, we can be quite sure it will not deal with America’s increasingly long list of taboo subjects:

Does Israel have hydrogen bombs? Did the U.S. ever secretly test Israeli nuclear weapons on American soil? And, of course, the most recent question to add to the list:

Who forged the letters that sucked us into this war?

Is it possible that a single metaphor, one that has dropped from the lips of a serving American general, can offer some forbidden insights into the dynamics of America’s relations with the Islamic world?

On July 28, 2003, Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, commander of US ground forces in Iraq, while talking to CNN, blamed the "multi-faceted conflict" Americans face in Iraq on "terrorists," "former regime leadership," "criminals" and "hired assassins." Then he volunteered an explanation that I think, perhaps unintentionally, was daring in its clarity. "[There] is what I would call a terrorist magnet where America, being present here in Iraq, creates a target of opportunity if you will."

Is it really necessary to pick bones with the General’s description of the Iraqi resistance as "terrorist activity"? The Iraqis have not attacked any American civilians, inside Iraq or elsewhere; they have only targeted American troops. Nor are they not attacking just any American troops. They are attacking only those who have invaded and occupied their country. Why then does the General call the Iraqi guerrillas terrorists, criminals and hired assassins? Perhaps, this is another semantic ploy we have borrowed from the Israelis. The Palestinians are terrorists even when they attack Israeli tanks and armor, even when their only weapons are stones.

It is all the more stunning, after this dissimulation, when General Sanchez offers his theory of "a terrorist magnet." It claims that the presence of American troops inside Iraq has become a "magnet" for "terrorist activity." It is the presence of American troops in Iraq that is the source, the cause of this

"terrorist activity." Moreover, this is natural. What else would you expect if you placed a "magnet" among iron filings? The iron filings would all be drawn towards and stick to the magnet.

This theory of "a terrorist magnet" is disconcertingly heretical. Although no one seems to have noticed, it undermines two key arguments the Bush administration has used, both ex ante and ex post, to sell the war on terrorism. First, the war on terrorism has been based on the premise that the terrorist attacks by Arab extremists are an ontological phenomenon. It is in the nature of the attackers, a nature instilled by their societies and in particular by their religion, to attack America. They fear America’s virtues: its freedom, prosperity, and the rights it grants to women. The terrorist attacks are motivated by the ontological rage of an inferior and flawed civilization–Islam–against the superior, dynamic, Christian civilization of the West. It is a thesis that has been advanced assiduously by Jewish and Christian Zionists. And it is this thesis that President Bush embraced when he declared war against the attackers of 9-11.

The theory General Sanchez offers contradicts this. It substitutes a Newtonian explanation for the ontological postulate favored by the Bush administration and much of the American media. The Iraqi resistance is not rooted in Iraqi nature, or in Sunni Iraqi nature, or Baa’thi Sunni Iraqi nature. The Iraqis have not sneaked into the United States to attack American troops. As the Iraqis see it, the American troops are being attacked because they are in the wrong place (Iraq), doing the wrong thing (illegally occupying Iraq), for the wrong reasons (capturing Iraqi oil and deepening Israeli hegemony over the Arabs).

The theory of a terrorist magnet would seem to run afoul of a second rationale for the US war against Iraq. In the first weeks after the official end of the war, when it appeared that no WMDs were to be found–and there was a risk that the earlier claims about WMDs would be seen as weapons of mass deception–we invented a new buzz word: Liberation. The WMDs were not the only reason for invading Iraq. We went in to liberate the Iraqis from Saddam’s tyranny. Conveniently forgotten was our support for this tyranny before the First Gulf War, our betrayal of the Kurdish resistance and Iraqi uprising, and the deaths and suffering we had inflicted on the Iraqis over thirteen years of bombings and sanctions.

Why then have the liberators become "a terrorist magnet"? Admittedly, the armed resistance is not national yet; it is confined mostly to Iraq’s Sunni Arab population. But if the Iraqis leading the armed resistance are "former regime leadership," "criminals" and "hired assassins," they could not hide among an Iraqi population well-disposed to their American liberators. However, to this date, no Iraqi has yet betrayed members of the Iraqi resistance.

If the toll of American dead and wounded continues to mount, this will raise more troubling questions. Why had we not seen this going in? Why had we not foreseen that 150,000 Americans deposited amidst a hostile population–a population that we had bombed and besieged for thirteen years–would become a magnet for "terrorists"? It is true that Muslims have a poor record of resisting local tyrannies, even when they are proxies for foreign powers; but we should have known that they have unexceptionably resisted foreign occupations. We should have known that Mujahideen ("terrorists" for their enemies) from all corners of the world would soon be entering Iraq to fight the foreign occupation, as they had done in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya, Kashmir, and Palestine.

So, if ordinary young Americans are dying today in Iraq–and many more recover from war wounds–that is not because the administration, the neoconservative ideologues, and the media could not have foreseen this. They did, but chose to ignore these concerns. In their calculus, the lives of a few ordinary Americans were expendable, compared to the great prizes before them. Arab oil had to be secured; and the Arab world had to be made safe for Israeli hegemony.

The thesis of a terrorist magnet raises a broader question, one that is at the heart of America’s relations with the Islamic world. General Sanchez’s remark–about Americana troops in Iraq serving as "terrorist magnets"–has drawn few comments from the media. The Newtonian connection he drew between an American action (insertion of troops into Iraq) and the reaction (Iraqi resistance) was perhaps too obvious to deny. And who would dare impugn the patriotism of the General commanding our forces in Iraq? Perhaps, that is why his remarks were quickly laid to rest.

However, no one in America’s mainstream media, much less a general or a politician, will dare to make a similar connection between America’s foreign policies towards the Islamic world and the anti-American forces that now proliferate in that region. The American political establishment promotes the ideology that the United States can do no wrong in its dealings with foreign countries. The United States is not only the most powerful country that has ever existed; it is also the most benevolent.

As a result, it is heretical to suggest that 9-11 may have been a blowback from our policies towards the Middle East. To suggest such a connection is not to justify 9-11. Yet most Americans are unwilling to separate the morality and causality of 9-11. Until we learn to do so there can be no rational discourse on the etiology of the growing conflicts between the United States and the Islamic world. And if that does not happen soon, the civilizational war which the Zionists–Christian and Jewish–and some Islamic extremists so avidly project may become a frightening reality.
